• Who he was: A 26-year-old street vendor from the town of Sidi Bouzid, Tunisia.

• What he did: On December 17, 2010, he set himself on fire in front of a local municipal building.

• Why he did it: He acted in protest against police harassment, the confiscation of his produce cart, and public humiliation by municipal officials over permit disputes.

• The Impact: His self-immolation sparked the Tunisian Revolution (also known as the Jasmine Revolution), leading to the fall of long-time President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali and igniting the wider Arab Spring across the Middle East and North Africa. Bouazizi died from his injuries on January 4, 2011.
