Manufacturing in Ethiopia
Manufacturing accounts for approximately 6.8 % of Ethiopia’s GDP. The
two largest sub-sectors are those of leather and textiles. These
industries are labor intensive and together they account for nearly 50%
of total employment in the manufacturing sector. The contribution of
manufacturing to the total employment in the country however, remains
small. Although there has been a steady flow of foreign investment into
the country, investing in manufacturing, especially in the agro-based
industries, has been slow. Very little investment is observed in tanning
and leather goods through this sector have a great potential.
