JONAH’S PRAYER INSIDE THE FISH

1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God.

2 Jonah prayed:

“I called to the Lord in my distress, and he answered me. From the depths of my ⌞watery⌟ grave I cried for help, and you heard my cry.

3 You threw me into the deep, into the depths of the sea, and water surrounded me. All the whitecaps on your waves have swept over me.

4 “Then I thought,

‘I have been banished from your sight. Will I ever see your holy temple again?’

5 “Water surrounded me, threatening my life. The deep ⌞sea⌟ covered me completely. Seaweed was wrapped around my head.

6 I sank to the foot of the mountains. I sank to the bottom, where bars held me forever. But you brought me back from the pit, O Lord, my God.

7 “As my life was slipping away, I remembered the Lord. My prayer came to you in your holy temple.

8 Those who hold on to worthless idols abandon their loyalty ⌞to you⌟.

9 But I will sacrifice to you with songs of thanksgiving. I will keep my vow. Victory belongs to the Lord!”

10 Then the Lord spoke to the fish, and it spit Jonah out onto the shore.

LA PRIÈRE DE JONAS À L'INTÉRIEUR DU POISSON

1 De l'intérieur du poisson, Jonas pria l'Éternel son Dieu.

2 Jonas a prié :

« J'ai invoqué le Seigneur dans ma détresse et il m'a répondu. Du fond de ma tombe « aqueuse », j'ai crié au secours, et vous avez entendu mon cri.

3 Tu m'as jeté dans l'abîme, dans les profondeurs de la mer, et l'eau m'a entouré. Tous les moutons blancs de tes vagues m'ont submergé.

4 « Puis j'ai pensé,

« J’ai été banni de votre vue. Reverrai-je un jour ton saint temple ?

5 « L’eau m’entourait, menaçant ma vie. La ⌞mer⌟ profonde m’a complètement recouvert. Des algues étaient enroulées autour de ma tête.

6 Je suis tombé au pied des montagnes. J'ai coulé au fond, là où les barreaux m'ont retenu pour toujours. Mais tu m'as ramené de la fosse, Seigneur, mon Dieu.

7 « Tandis que ma vie s'écoulait, je me suis souvenu du Seigneur. Ma prière vous est parvenue dans votre saint temple.

8 Ceux qui s'accrochent à des idoles sans valeur abandonnent leur fidélité ⌞à toi⌟.

9 Mais je vous offrirai des sacrifices avec des chants de remerciement. Je tiendrai mon vœu. La victoire appartient au Seigneur !

10 Alors l'Éternel parla au poisson, et il crachait Jonas sur le rivage.
