As the course hits the 20-mile mark—the "wall"—the humidity begins to take its toll. The lead pack, once twelve strong, disintegrates into a frantic scramble. Abebaw notices a subtle hitch in the stride of the favorite from Kenya. It is a microscopic sign of cramping.
