Step 2: The Logic of Relics

Step 2: The Logic of Relics

If one were to bypass the guardian and enter the chamber, the second step is the recognition of historical displacement. Historians and archaeologists point to the timeline of the First Temple’s destruction in Jerusalem (587 BCE). The narrative of the Ark’s journey from Solomon’s Temple to the Ethiopian highlands is rich in tapestry but sparse in archaeological record. When one examines the "Ark" kept in Axum, one finds it is a tabot—a replica. In the theology of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, the tabot carries the essence of the original. Thus, the absence of the physical, gold-plated box described in Exodus is replaced by the presence of a consecrated substitute. The "Ark" is not a physical object in the Western sense; it is a spiritual placeholder.
