Step 3: The Internal Synodical Scrutiny
Within the walls of the Synod, the "Council of Elders" demanded a rigorous account of stewardship. Rumors of administrative impropriety and the alleged marginalization of certain monastic orders created a rift in the church hierarchy. To remain Patriarch, Abune Mathias I had to undergo a process of "administrative purgation." He was required to open the books of the Church’s vast endowments and explain the appointment processes for high-ranking bishops. He justified his patriarchate by initiating transparency reforms, effectively arguing that his leadership was not personal, but institutional and bound by the ancient canons of the Tewahedo tradition.
