The Maqdala Context & Artifact Returns
Following his suicide on April 13, 1868, to avoid capture by British forces, his fortress at Magdala was plundered. Hundreds of precious artifacts were removed and taken to the UK. In recent years, several sacred items have been repatriated to Ethiopia, including:
- Locks of Hair: Strands cut from the Emperor's corpse by a British officer were officially returned by the National Army Museum.
- Relics & Regalia: Historic artifacts, including a blood-stained cloth and a golden hand cross, were successfully returned by the King's Own Royal Regiment Museum Trust.
