Barn swallows of different subspecies resting together

Across Europe, Asia and the Americas, barn swallows breed in open landscapes, often shaped by human activity, before migrating south to warmer regions for the winter. During these journeys, they form loose flocks, pausing where water, insects and resting sites are abundant. They can even drink in flight, skimming the water's surface with their beaks.
