Selection Process and Timeline
- Nomination: Member states nominate candidates who submit vision statements, CVs, and campaign financing disclosures.
- Interactive Dialogues: Public dialogues and town hall events were held through April, June, and July 2026 for candidates to present platforms and answer member states.
- Security Council Recommendation: The UN Security Council will vote (subject to the veto power of its five permanent members) to recommend a single candidate.
- General Assembly Appointment: The 193-member General Assembly formally appoints the final candidate by vote before the end of 2026.
