But their motherhood transcended their biological children. The twins opened their tents—and their hearts—to every orphan of the war, every displaced family, and every weary traveler. They pooled the milk of their herds, distributed food equally, and sang the same lullabies to every child in the settlement. Under their care, the children of former enemies played in the dust together, learning to share water, laughter, and sorrow. They no longer knew who was "east" or "west"; they only knew they were children of Ajetu and Ashetu.
