In 2011, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed Sahle-Work Zewde as Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON). Under her leadership, the Nairobi office became a UN hub of influence for East and Central Africa, according to the 2012 Africa Yearbook.
In June 2018, UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Sahle-Work as Special Representative to the African Union and Head of the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU), with the rank of Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations. She was the first woman to hold this position. At that time, Sahle-Work was preparing for her retirement.
Sahle-Work Zewde served as President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia from October 25, 2018, to October 7, 2024. I thank her for her service. PEACE.
