Step 4: The Moral Weight of the "Voice of the Voiceless"

Step 4: The Moral Weight of the "Voice of the Voiceless"

Perhaps the most profound justification required of him was personal. As the representative of millions of Orthodox Christians, his patriarchate was validated only by his ability to act as a moral compass. He had to prove to the younger, more radicalized generation of the faithful that he was still the "Voice of the Voiceless." He was forced to move from the quietude of the cathedral to the front lines of public statements, issuing condemnations of human rights abuses and calls for peace that risked angering the ruling elite. By staking his position on these moral pronouncements, he justified his continued service as a necessary, inconvenient prophet rather than a mere ceremonial figurehead.
