Cable Anatomy
A standard fiber optic strand consists of three main components:
- Core: The ultra-thin, central tube of glass or plastic through which light travels.
- Cladding: The outer layer surrounding the core that has a different refractive index. This difference forces light to bounce back into the core, keeping the signal contained.
- Coating/Buffer: A tough, protective plastic layer that shields the glass from moisture, bending, and physical damage.
